Training Page Title

At Southampton Counselling we have a number of different options on offer. We run specialised short courses for professionals in various fields, and others aimed at specific groups.

Our core activity is a structured ladder for those who wish to train professionally in counselling; individuals who have previous training may wish to join our program at an appropriate level. Our courses are as follows:

Certificate in Skills and Attitudes
A 1-year foundation-level course (Tuesday evenings) with Seminars, an Experiential Group, theoretical Training and practice in skills. Useful for health-related professionals, Clergy, Teachers, Management staff or for personal development.

Diploma in Counselling Skills
A 1-year course (Monday evenings) exploring different models of counselling and what they mean in clinical practice. This is preliminary to the Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling but may also be useful as a self-contained module since it covers Human Growth and Development, Group dynamics, and seminars from specialists in the fields of Couple-work, Sexual Difficulties and Family dynamics.

BACP/WPF Accredited Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling
A 2-year intensive selected entry course running on Thursday afternoons (1st year) and Friday afternoons (2nd year). This is a substantial course requiring a minimum commitment of 11-15 hours a week, and includes the provision by SPCS of both client work and Clinical Supervision, the cost of which is included in the course fees. A thorough grounding is given in psychodynamic practice, with seminars covering various topics such as psychopathology (eg depression, eating disorders, suicide), Psychological development, Social perspectives (eg gender and cultural influences), Groups, Brief Therapy, Loss and endings.

WPF Certificate and Diploma in Supervision
A two-stage course for experienced psychodynamic counsellors, who are providing or are in a position to provide supervision for others. The certificate stage is a 60-hour course, one Saturday per month, with the diploma stage involving a further 30 hours.

WPF Advanced Diploma
A 2-year course which as a qualification enables the holder to work as an independent psychodynamic counsellor in private practice. Applicants for the course should have successfully completed the BACP/WPF accredited Diploma in Counselling, or equivalent, and have at least 150 hours counselling experience. The course content covers the history and development of psychodynamic theories, human development, and advanced clinical and theoretical concepts.

Advanced Seminars
These are for continuing professional development of trained psychodynamic counsellors working towards further qualification. This series of Seminars over two years offers higher-level theoretical and clinical training and would be useful to counsellors working towards full BACP individual accreditation.
