SPCS: Southampton Pastoral Counselling Service - was founded in 1977 by David Porter, who saw the need for a counselling service to serve the people of Southampton and the surrounding area. We are a registered Charity (No.1099978) and the aims of the Service as set out in the Charitable Trust Deed are:
- to provide counselling for people in need, irrespective of race, class or creed
- to facilitate the development of counselling skills, both within the Service and the community
- to offer a programme of courses and support groups for the promotion of community health
In 2003 we became a limited company under the name of Southampton Counselling Ltd. We remain a not-for-profit organisation and a charitable trust, and our aims continue as above.
Since its inception in 1977 the service has grown steadily, and today we have nearly fifty counsellors offering over 3,500 counselling hours to around 200 people in the course of a year. We offer open-ended psychodynamic counselling, short-term individual counselling, and Group Counselling, both here at Northam and in Winchester.
Southampton Counselling is part of a National Network of counselling centres affiliated to the WPF in London, and we work to their National standards for our counselling and training. In addition, our two-year Diploma in Counselling is accredited by the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)
Our premises are close by Meridian TV at Northam, in Southampton, in offices over Northam Methodist Church on the corner of Union Road. However we are not a Christian Counselling organisation, and we welcome people of all cultures and beliefs as counsellors, trainees and clients.
